A few words with welterweight Michael McKinson

British welterweight  Michael McKinson says he has an opportunity to change his life when he faces Chris Kongo this weekend. McKinson (19-0, 2 KOs) faces Kongo (12-0, 7 KOs) on the undercard of Alexander Povetkin’s rematch with Dillian Whyte at the Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Box Office and DAZN. It sees McKinson finally get the chance to showcase his talents on a big platform, and he’s relishing the opportunity ahead of him.

McKinson said: “I’ve started from the bottom and I’ve done things the hard way. I come from a small fighting city of Portsmouth and I wasn’t a top amateur, so it makes it even better that I’m finally where I want to be. My experience as a professional has been a lot harder than other guys. I boxed on small halls shows to work my way up against higher calibre opponents, and I’ve rarely lost rounds or been in tough fights. I’ve been calling for big fights for a while, and now my career starts on Saturday. This is my golden ticket to change my life. Beating Chris Kongo can open up so many opportunities, and once I get the job done we can talk about whoever is next.”

Elsewhere on Saturday’s event, JJ Metcalf faces Ted Cheeseman for the vacant British super-welterweight title.
