GL: Now that quite a bit of time has passed, what are your thoughts on the Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev fight? "It is what it is. It was a very tough fight for a middleweight, to super-middleweight to have to come up and fight against such a ferocious fighter. We fought, we dug in, we had three officials who saw it the same way so we accept it. I understand the controversy behind it, but there's controversy behind a lot of fights and it won't be the last one. That's where we stand with it right now."
GL: At what point in the fight do you feel Andre figured him out? Do you think the rematch will be an easier fight for Andre?
Virgil Hunter: "I never try to say because I know for a fact that Andre didn't bring his A game. I know that for a fact. They didn't find out how good he was, they just found out who he was, but I never try to jump the gun and say it's going to be different because of this or because of that. I think his ability to adjust and his ability to realize what he needs to do is definitely intact. If that's intact, it's something that Sergey is going to have to overcome. We were in a situation that we had to fight out of our weight class, these are bigger and stronger guys, but we'll find a way to keep winning."
GL: When do you expect to rematch to take place?
VH: "I have no say on that, he's 32 years old now and he has his business team so when they tell me it's time I'm ready to go to work. I'm proud of the way he handles his business and conducts himself, he doesn't need me for that."
GL: You're working with Andrzej Fonfara for his fight with Chad Dawson. How is everything going in preparation for that fight?
VH: "Andrew is doing quite well, I'm surprised at how athletic he is and he has a tremendous work ethic, but he understands that Chad Dawson is a three time champion and nobody to fool with, he could be the right person away from getting right back on track. He's never really taken a beating, he had one tough fight with Andre (Ward) but other than that there aren't that many fights that show he's physically deteriorated. He's just as dangerous and if he's motivated it's going to be a tough fight, the Chad Dawson we're preparing for is the Bad Chad Dawson who beat Glenn Johnson, beat B-Hop and beat Tarver, that's the one we're preparing for because that's what we have to prepare for."
GL: Is this a must win fight for Fonfara in terms of staying relevant at light heavyweight?
VH: "I think it's a must win for both of them to be able to make noise in that division. I think that Fonfara being younger if he comes up short, he's going to set himself back a little bit, but he's young enough to come back. At this stage he should understand that he must win the fight."
GL: You have Peter Quillin up there as well, he told me he's hoping to return in April, how is he looking?
VH: "Peter is looking well, he's transforming his body back into a middleweight, but he's working hard. He's not going to fight at 160, for his next fight it'll probably be at 166, 167, but we're having his body fat measured and he can definitely safely make middleweight, but not so quickly. I want to slowly bring him down."
GL: What about Andre Berto? I know he's up there as well.
VH: "He's working and he's in the gym training waiting to get the call letting him know who he's fighting."
GL: Shawn Porter has been rumored, have you heard about it?
VH: "Yes I've heard that, but there hasn't been any confirmation, but I happen to think it's a good fight for both guys. Andre isn't an old lion yet, but he's a mature lion and mature lions got to stay on the plains. He does that, his work ethic has really pleased me since we've been together and his IQ has advanced quite a bit, so when you see Andre you're going to see a good fight period."
GL: Any update on Amir Khan's next move?
VH: "I think he's getting close to finding a date sometime in April also. He's up there training in the bay, he's been there for three weeks and he looks well."
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?
VH: "I'm hoping the sport continues to push forward and make life better for all of its participants, it's a tough sport and I hope everybody can find the pathway to communication and success and not just jump on one another. We always love to say it's about the fighters, well if that's the case let's make it about the fighters."
