GARCIA STOPS KHAN TO CLAIM WORLD JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
By Scott Shaffer

Danny Garcia TKO4 Amir Khan... In Las Vegas, Amir Khan got off to a great start against Danny Garcia, winning the first two rounds. After six minutes of action, Khan appeared too fast and too strong to lose. But towards the end of the third, the bloodied Garcia caught Khan with a counterpunch that sent Khan down. Khan beat the count and finished out the round, but Khan arose with a bad case of what old-time trainers used to call spaghetti legs. For the rest of the third and fourth rounds, Khan wobbled badly even from glancing blows. He fought competitively but went down twice more in the fourth.  For the last knockdown, Khan beat the count and was clear headed, telling referee Kenny Bayless he felt fine. When Khan didn't step forward immediately, Bayless waved off the fight. You can argue it was a bit quick for a fight of this magnitude, but Khan's legs were so unsteady, this ending does not go down as controversial. Beltwise, Khan now holds the WBA and WBC titles, the most recent 140-pound world champion Timothy Bradley, still recognized by the WBO, has moved up to welterweight, and the IBF continues to recognize drug cheat Lamont Peterson. No doubt the corrupt WBC will look to confuse the situation this week, but Boxingtalk now recognizes Garcia as the true world champion at 140 pounds. source: hbo boxing after dark
