HECTOR CAMACHO, SR., 1962-2012

Hector Camacho, Sr. passed away on Saturday morning in Puerto Rico shortly after being removed from life support. Camacho, 50, had been shot in the face during a drive-by shooting in Bayamon, Puerto Rico earlier this week. After Camacho was shot in the face at very close range, the bullet lodged in his right shoulder.  The shooting occurred while the former champion was sitting in a car with a man named Adrian Alberto Mojica Moreno, who was killed in the attack. ESPN reports that ten bags of cocaine were recovered from the car. No arrests have been made.  Camacho had an incredibly long career, spanning 1980-2010 that saw him win world titles at 130, 135 and 140. Early in his career, he was among the sports brightest stars, but fell out of favor when he adopted a safety first style and partied harder than he trained.  Still, Camacho's triumphs were many and he fought a hall of fame roster that includes Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr., Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Freddie Roach. Other notable wins on Camcho' resume are Edwin Rosario, Ray Mancini, Howard Davis, Bazooka Limon, Vinny Pazienza, Greg Haugen (whom he split two bouts with), Jose Luis Ramirez and Cornelius Boza-Edwards. -Scott Shaffer
