MAYWEATHER TWEETS THAT ALEXANDER LIKELY TO BE HIS NEXT OPPONENT
Floyd Mayweather has a date for his next fight, May 4th, but until know, his opponent for that date has been the subject of much speculation, with Robert Guerrero and Saul Alvarez's names being bandieid about. Last night, Mayweather threw a new name into the mix, tweeting that, "the negotiations for my fight are almost done. The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It’d be a unification bout at welterweight." Alexander was scheduled to fight Kell Brook, the IBF's mandatory challenger, on February 23rd, but pulled out of that fight a few days ago, claiming a bicep injury. If Mayweather is telling the truth, Alexander's injury claim is almost certainly false. Mayweather still holds the WBC welterweight title he took from Victor Ortiz in 2011. Whether the IBF will go along with the unification (which would be desirable for boxing but unfair to Brook), remains to be seen. --Scott Shaffer
