The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today welterweight champion and Hall of Famer Pipino Cuevas will make the trip from his home in Mexico to Canastota for the 24th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 6-9th.“Pipino Cuevas generated so much excitement for boxing fans in the 1970s,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “We’re thrilled that he will return to participate in the Hall of Fame Weekend festivities.”


    Born in Santo Tomis, Mexico, Cuevas turned pro in 1971. He captured the WBA welterweight championship in 1976 and successfully defended the crown 11 times over the next four years. Cuevas compiled a pro record of 35-15 (31 KOs) and holds wins over Angel Espada (TKO 12), Clyde Gray (KO 2), Pete Ranzany (TKO 2) and Randy Shields (W 15) among others. In 2002 the hard-punching Cuevas was inducted into the Hall of Fame.


    “It is my pleasure to be a member of the Hall of Fame and return to Canastota for the 2013 Hall of Fame Weekend,” said Cuevas.Events planned for the weekend include a banquet, a night of welterweight warriors, parade, golf tournament, boxing autograph card show, cocktail party and the Official Induction Ceremony honoring the Class of 2013. Inductees include two-division champion Arturo “Thunder” Gatti (posthumous), five-time world champion Virgil “Quicksilver” Hill and two-time light flyweight champion Myung-Woo Yuh in the Modern category; “Let’s Get It On” referee Mills Lane, ring announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr. and journalist Colin Hart.  Posthumous inductees in the Old-Timer, Pioneer, Non-Participant and Observer categories will also be honored.


    An impressive list of over 40 boxing greats from the United States and abroad are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
