SPINA WITHDRAWS FROM MANFREDO FIGHT
By Rob Soucy
A source close to Joey Spina's camp has confirmed that the Providence-based light heavyweight has withdrawn from his March 15th rematch with Peter Manfredo Jr. At this point, the exact reason for Spina's withdrawal is unclear but it appears that it may be for a medical reason. The show is still three weeks away, so the promoter, Jimmy Burchfield's CES, and its matchmaker Michael Parente, should be able to find a suitable replacement. They may not have to look farther than Brian Barbosa, another Providence light heavyweight, who has been training for a possible March bout and would provide Manfredo with at least as good a challenge as Spina. Barbosa has indicated in the not-so-distant past he would love an opportunity to face Manfredo. However, it is unknown if Manfredo would take a fight with Barbosa on short notice. UPDATE: When approached by Boxingtalk, CES responded that it had not been informed by Spina's camp that the fight was off.
