By Rick Evans
Argenis Mendez KO4 Juan C. Salgado... Argenis Mendez exacted his revenge against Juan Carlos Salgado on Saturday, scoring a picture-perfect fourth-round knockout to win the IBF junior lightweight championship in Costa Mesa, California. Mendez got the fight off to a roaring start as he floored the champion with a minute to go in the first round with a solid right hand to the chin. Mendez followed up with hopes to finish the fight, but Salgado finished the round on his feet. Round two saw Salgado finding his balance and having a competitive round, until he was hit was another solid right hand, followed by a left hook that put Salgado on the ropes as the round came to a close. Salgado fared a bit better in round three, seemingly getting his legs back underneath him, albeit, losing the round. The end came in the first minute of the fourth with a Salgado right hand setting up a bodacious left hook that detached Salgado from the championship, and his senses. With the win, Mendez goes to 21-2 and scores his twelfth knockout, defeating the man who beat him in 2011. Salgado falls to 26-2 with the defeat.
