RIGONDEAUX BEATS DONAIRE; ASCENDS TO THE SPORT'S HIGHEST LEVEL
By Rick Evans

Guillermo Rigondeaux W12 Nonito Donaire... Boxing made a triumphant return to New York City's Radio City Music Hall tonight as Guillermo Rigondeaux won the world super bantamweight championship against Nonito Donaire (for those who track sanctioning body belts, Rigondeaux retained the WBA belt and won Donaire's WBO belt). Rigondeaux, who won two Olympic championships for Cuba, scored a lopsided unanimous decision over Nonito Donaire in a fight that can only be called a schooling. Rigondeaux was slick, crafty and won the battle of counter punches throughout the first nine rounds.  Donaire came to life in the tenth, giving the fight itís greatest drama by scoring a knockdown on a counter left hook. Rigondeaux was not seriously hurt and Donaire was not able to mount much additional offense, although he clearly won the round. Round twelve saw Rigondeaux land a beautiful counter left that hurt Donaire and injured his eye-- Donaire held his hand over his right eye for the majority of the last round. The official scores were 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111 all in favor of the new world champion. Although the scores were close on paper, the judges seemed to give Donaire every benefit of the doubt and their scores were not indicative of the boxing lesson that Rigondeaux gave Donaire. Rigondeaux goes to 12-0 with 8 KOs while Donaire suffers his first loss in years and falls to 31-2 with 20 KOs.  source: hbo
