HUCK-AFOLABI III SET FOR JUNE 8TH IN BERLIN
Press Release: The third fight between WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) and Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs) is going to be staged on June 8th in Berlin at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. “I’m glad that we have finally arrived at this point. I will be fighting in my backyard,” said an excited Huck.
Originally, Don King won the purse bid to Huck-Afolabi III, but the right to host the fight was handed to Sauerland Event when King failed to finalize the fight within a set period. Sauerland as the second-highest bidder in February's purse bid will now put on the show instead.
The first time the pair met was in December of 2009 when Huck won a hard-fought battle by scores of 115-113 (twice) and 116-112. After Huck’s brief spell as a heavyweight in a close loss to WBA regular champion Alexander Povetkin, and with Afolabi recapturing the interim title, they met once again on May 5th of last year. The rematch ended in a majority draw resulting in Afolabi keeping his WBO mandatory position.
Sauerland Event’s Managing Director Chris Meyer said, “After that was all set, we quickly came to an agreement with Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who is looking after the interests of Afolabi. The fight will take place in Berlin on June 8th.”
Huck is excited about fighting in his home city of Berlin. “Ola Afolabi is a tough nut to crack. However, he won’t be causing me that much trouble again. I will prove who is the best in Berlin,” promised the 28-year-old.
Tickets for the big fight night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany are available from May 3 onwards. Tickets can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.
