Jon Baladez W4 Edgar Cantu... Triple A Promotions promoted a boxing show on July 5th at Uni-Trade Stadium in Laredo, TX. The main event featured Edgar "La Bestia" Cantu (3-1-1) of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico taking on Jon Baladez of Austin, TX in the junior lightweight division. Baladez was making his pro debut. The first round was a feeling out process for both fighters with a solid exchange at the bell. In the beginning of the second, Cantu landed a solid left uppercut to his taller opponent, but Baladez immidiately answered with a straight left to the head of Cantu that almost sent him down. Round three turned out to be pretty even, with both fighters having their moments. In the final round, Cantu landed the firmer punches, but Baladez was more active, and prevented his shorter opponent from getting inside. Baladez's pro debut was a successful one as he got the unanimous decision with all three judges turning in scores of 39-37.
UNDERCARD... The evening kicked off with Sammy Villareal taking on Richard Hernandez in the flyweight division as both fighters made their pro debut. Round one started off with Villareal landing the more stiff, meaningful shots. Round two featured Hernandez getting into his rhythm as he landed thirty plus unanswered punches. Rounds three and four showed to be pretty even. In the end, all three judges scored it 39-37 for Richard Hernandez (1-0).
That bout was followed by Alberto Espinoza (1-4) of Wilmer, Minn taking on Reshard Hicks of Jarrell, TX making his pro debut. Hicks started the fight utilizing his reach advantage. Espinoza used his experience to survive the fight, but in the end just could not get around his opponents longer arms. Judges scored it 40-36 (twice) and 39-37 giving Hicks his first ever victory.
The third fight pitted Angel Martinez (3-0) of San Antonio, TX against Henry Hernandez (1-1) of Eagle Lake, TX in a battle in the 135-pound division. Martinez sent Hernandez to the canvas with a left hook to his opponents' head in round two. Hernandez seemed to recover, but in the end lost with a decision of 40-35 on all three official cards.
That was followed by a female showdown featuring representatives from both sides of the Rio Grande River. Jennifer Ruiz of Laredo, TX took on Valeria Chavarria of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico as both ladies made their pro debuts. The bout took place in the junior flyweight division. Both women came to fight. Ruiz was able to land a sharp straight right to the nose of Chavarria several times throughout the bout that proved to be the difference maker in her receiving a unanimous decision with scores of 39-38 and 40-36 (twice).
Next, Eddie Ramirez (6-13) of Laredo, TX took on Victor Rosas (3-1) of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico in a four-round lightweight contest. The fight had several exciting exchanges and Rosas was usually the first to engage. In the fourth round, Rosas opened up a cut under the left eye of Ramirez. Despite Ramirez giving it his all in the final round, it just wasn't enough. The judges scored it a majority decision for Rosas, 40-36 (twice) and 38-38.
