SALIDO DENIES LOMACHENKO HISTORICAL TITLE WIN
By Rick Evans

Orlando Salido W12 Vasyl Lomachenko... In the HBO opener, Mexico's Orlando Salido turned back the challenge of celebrated amateur star Vasyl Lomachenko by winning a split decision. The fight was for the WBO featherweight title; however Salido, who won the title in his last fight, lost it on the scales after he failed to make the featherweight limit of 126 pounds yesterday. Tonight, he was fighting as a welterweight by the time he made it to the ring, 147 pounds, which gave him an eleven pound weight advatage. In what was the Ukrainian Lomachenko’s second or seventh professional fight, depending on the source of the records, Salido used his weight advantage all night as he consistently pressured Lomachenko and attacked the body in an attempt to wear down the younger fighter.  Multiple low blows from Salido that went undetected by referee Lawrence Cole seemed to have a great effect on Lomachenko, as much if not more than the body shots. The real drama came in the final round as Lomachenko hit Salido with a straight left hand that almost gave Lomachenko a dramatic knockout victory, chasing Salido around the ring in an attempt to finish the fight. However, it was not to be as Salido finished on his feet and won the split decision victory. Scores were 116-112, 115-113 and 113-115. source: hbo
