This weekend in Pala, California, lightweight Rustam Nugaev (26-6-1) will take on Marvin Quintero (25-4). The fight will headline ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. Nugaev won all four of his fights in 2013, while Quintero was inactive last year after a 2012 split-decision loss in a world title fight.
Here is what Nugaev had to say to Boxingtalk:
Benny Henderson Jr: Give the readers your thoughts on your upcoming match-up against Marvin Quintero.
Rustam Nugaev: This will be tough fight for me. Marvin Quintero is very experienced fighter who's fought at the championship level and lost a split decision. I will have to go out there and set the tone of the fight.
Your opponent is coming off a loss, as well as a long layoff (Quintero's last fight was a split-decision loss in an IBF title bid vs. Miguel Vazquez in October 2012). Do you feel you can capitalize on that?
RN: When I beat Jonathan Maicelo (in April 2013), I was coming off a long layoff just like Quintero. It's not the layoff but what you do during that layoff that matters. I know Quintero works hard in training camp and he'll be coming with the same mind set as I was vs. Maicelo. He'll be trying to take my high ratin.g I can guarantee that.
What are you expecting to see from your opponent?
Quintero can box and he can brawl, so I'm ready for whatever he brings into the ring. I'm not looking past him at all.
Quintero is a very heavy handed fighter (21 KOs in his 25 wins). Is his power a concern?
RN: My concern is to win the fight and do whatever it takes to get the victory. His power is OK but I'm not going to let it worry me. This is a great match-up for boxing fans who will see the fight and not the record build-up for one of the contestants as they are becoming used to
: If you could send a message to your opponent, as well as the fight world, what would that message be?
RN: Message to my opponent: Let's not disappoint the boxing fans. Message to the fans: Tune into ESPN2's Friday Night Fights on March 7th and witness a great night boxing!
