CAMPILLO STOPS WILLIAMS ON CUTS

Gabriel Campillo TKO5 Thomas Williams Gabriel Campillo, a former WBA light heavyweight titlist thought to be on the downside of his career, pulled off an upset of unbeaten Thomas Williams in Shelton, Washington. Campillo stopped Williams on cuts when the ringside physician advised the referee to halt the bout between rounds five and six. The bout was an IBF eliminator, putting Campliio in line to challenge Bernard Hopkins, but that opportunity likely wont come until 2015 because Hopkins is likely to unify his IBF and WBA titles with WBO champion Sergey Kovalev later this year. Williams is talented, but appeared unsure of himself when he was cut by the crafty boxing Campillo's punches. Williams' corner and cutman did nothing to restore the 26 year-old's confidence, and the fight was stopped because of middle-sized cut over the left eye.   When the fight was stopped, Williams immediately walked over to ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas, who had spoken glowingly of Williams in previous weeks, and apologized for the loss. Williams has nothing to apologize for, and will have more chances at stardom in the future. But he needs to seize the opportunity next time instead of passively allowing the fight to end. source: espn2 friday night fights
