HIGSON AND CRONIN CAPTURE CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
By Ivan Montiel @ ringside
Kevin Higson W10 Ryan Young... At Toronto's Royal York Hotel last night, Kevin Higson lifted the Canadian junior middleweight championship from Ryan Young. Higson (10-1) won the ten-round bout via unanimous decision. Official scores were 96-94 (twice) and 98-92. It was a barn burner with both guys landing big shots. Early on, it looked like Young (10-2) could very well outbox Higson by using his height and reach advantage. Young's jab was working effectively until Higson adjusted and began coming inside to land big shots which won the judges over. Both men fought a courageous fight.
Tim Cronin W8 Nathan Miller... On the same show, Tim Cronin(9-1-1) defeated Nathan Miller (9-1-2) for the vacant Canadian light heavyweight championship. This fight was only an eight rounder, which Cronin won by unanimous decision. Boxingtalk unofiicially scored it a draw from ringside. In the first half of the bout, Miller pressed the action and backed up Cronin. In the second half, Cronin got a second wind and landed the better punches. It was Miller's first pro loss, and it should be noted he is more of a super middleweight than a light heavyweight.
