GL: How has everything been going in preparation? What can we expect to see from you on October 14? It's going great man, I've been training really hard for a while now because I originally thought I was going to be facing Leo Santa Cruz, but nothing has changed now that I'm fighting Andres Gutierrez. I know he's a tough contender and he's coming to take everything away from me. He's got 36 wins and only one defeat and everything to win and nothing to lose, so I have to be at my best to make sure there are no setbacks. I'm dedicated for this fight and I had a twelve round sparring session against three different guys today."
GL: Have you watch any of Gutierrez on film?
Abner Mares: "Yes. He's a good fighter who comes forward with the typical Mexican style. He throws a lot of punches, he fights with heart and he doesn't give up. He's a dangerous fighter and I'm taking him very seriously."
GL: You hit it on the head that this is a guy with everything to gain and nothing to lose. Then you couple that with the fact that this isn't the fight that you really wanted, that would be Santa Cruz. Does that make it more difficult for the task at hand?
AM: "It doesn't because the fact of the matter is I got this guy in front of me right now and if I don't take care of business with this guy I will never get the other fight. I'm going in there to take him out and get Leo next. If it's not Leo, I'm promising you now I'm going to fight te best available guys out there. If it's not Leo I want Frampton, if it's not Frampton I want Oscar Valdez who just won a great fight. Any of the champions out there I'm ready for."
GL: Does it bother you that you're not the main event?
AM: "No it doesn't bother me. My job is to go in there and to perform. Going first or last doesn't matter to me."
GL: The last time you fought at the StubHub Center it wasn't a good night for you as you suffered the worst loss of your career. Does exorcising those demons mean a lot to you?
AM: "It is. It is really important and to this day nobody has asked me that and I'm glad you brought it up. I owe my people a great show, I owe my people rounds. I'm not superstitous at all, but I'm happy to be fighting here again and to get that out of the way. Mentally it does have that taste where it brings back a lot so I want to go in there and get it out of the way."
GL: Other than victory do you have a prediction?
AM: "Yes. I want a knockout and a spectacular one too. I'm not taking anything away from Gutierrez, but that's just the way I'm training and that's just the way I feel."
GL: Closing thoughts?
AM: "Be ready to see a different Abner. In my last fight people were thrilled with my boxing style, but this time around I'm going to give them action and it's going to be a very exciting fight. Make sure you tune into Fox if you can't make it to the venue because it's going to be a great night of boxing."
