Greg Leon: Congrats on your victory. Can you give us some thoughts on your performance [an eight-round unanimous decision win over Glenn Dezurn (9-1-1)? '
Jessie Hernandez: I feel I did what I was supposed to do. I feel like I kept my distance and for the most part, executed my game plan. I give myself a B+.
GL: Was there anything about Dezurn that surprised you?
JH: He actually moved his head a lot more than what I thought he would. Decent pop on his punches, but nothing that could stop me. "
GL: Dezurn got off to a good start but you seemed to take control of the bout in round three or four. Was that part of the plan coming in?
JH: I believe it is more of a trait for me. I get better as the rounds progress. I do believe he puched himself out. He tried to load up too much and that affected him as the rounds progressed.
GL: What are you hoping this victory leads to?
JH: A fight on national television and hopefully a couple more fights down the line. Another undefeated fighter on something associated to HBO or Showtime. Those are great opportunities.
GL: When can we expect your next fight to take place?
JH: After talking to my promoter I expect it to be mid January or mid February. I feel very good about those dates and plan on being back at the gym asap.
GL: What are some of your goals for 2018?
JH: First of all, rankings. The main thing for me is to make a name for myself nationally. If you make a name nationally, it naturally becomes a worldwide thing. The goal is to take the steps needed to eventually attract a world title belt opportunity.
GL: Is there anybody specifically that you feel would be a great fight for you to take your career to the next level?
JH: I was asked about avenging my loss to Ray Ximenez (16-1), but would want it as a ten- or twelve-round fight. I believe that is important and would further enable my confidence to take the next step.
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?
JH: I just want to thank everybody who believes in me. My promoter, Dmitriy Salita, definitely believes in me. I can't thank him enough. My gym Faith Hope and Gloves along with my coaches Sambo, Richard, and RayRay and my manager Casey Gutierrez. What motivates me the most is the youth in my community. I want to be as best as I can, a positive example and influence for their future. The youth is my passion, and I want them to know they can achieve big things in life.
