WBA SETS NEW RECORD: 4 CHAMPS IN ONE WEIGHT CLASS!
The WBA will soon have four cruiserweight champions: WBA super champion Murat Gassiev, WBA champion in recess Denis Lebedev, WBA interim champion Arsen Goulamirian, and coming soon, the WBA regular champion, which will be handed to the winner of a July 7th bout in Kazakhstan between former WBA light heavyweight title holder Beibut Shumenov (17-2) and Hizni Altunkaya (30-1). Shumenov, a 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian, last fought in 2016 and retired last June due to an eye injury. At the time, he held the WBA regular cruiserweight title. This is believed to be the first time in history a sanctioning organization has four champions in one weight class, with Lebedev being particularly egregious because he actually lost to Gassiev but the WBA kept him as champion (also, would it have killed the WBA to have Shumenov fight Goulamirian?). --Scott Shaffer
