Congrats on a great victory, can you give us some thoughts on your performance? I feel like I was able to do what I wanted to do on Saturday night. Defensively speaking I got hit more than I expected to and wanted to. It's not like we go into the ring looking to hit, but I got caught with a few big shots that I didn't anticipate giving up, but I thought I did a phenomenal job of out-boxing him and winning the fight. Nobody expected me to fight from the outside on Saturday night, but I think when it was time for us to turn it on and get into his body and back him and be really aggressive, I think we were able to switch it up and do that and it was a difference maker in the fight.
GL: Was there anything about Garcia that surprised you?
Shawn Porter: "He took my shots. I also think he's got more heart than I expected. I expected to really get to him, don't get me wrong I got to him, but not at the level I expected to. I think he was able to stay pretty level headed throughout the fight even though it wasn't going the way he wanted it to go."
GL: Do you feel your clearly won the fight or do you feel it was close enough that it could have gone either way?
SP: "I feel like I clearly won. I didn't go back and take a look at the fight, but I did everything that it took to win the fight. I felt like there were a lot of points in the fight where it was like Keith Thurman in the sense that at the end of the round I got caught with a few shots, but that shouldn't outdo all of the work I've done for the rest of the round."
GL: What made you decide to come out on your bounce for this fight? Was that to give Garcia a different look than what he expected?
SP: "I wanted to give him a look he wasn't expecting and I also knew that he wasn't going to be able to box with me like that. I think for the majority of the fight we got what we expected."
GL: Other than tightening up your defense, is there anything else you feel needs improvement moving forward?
SP: "Everything. The power punching, the accuracy. I don't know what the numbers were, but I feel like I might have been more accurate in this fight than I was in previous fights. Yet and still everything needs to improve and raise a level, especially considering I'm looking to be in the ring with guys like Keith Thurman and Errol Spence Jr."
GL: Your father told me you guys want the Errol Spence fight asap. How do you think the fight plays out?
SP: "We do. We want that fight asap, I think it's a tremendous fight and it's not just won on physicality. You've got to come in with a great game plan and I think we can do that. I'm more than ready for southpaws and I'm more than ready for anybody who can fight me going forwards or fight me going backwards. I think it's a great fight and it very well may be the best fight in years for the welterweight division."
GL: Who do you like in the Golovkin-Canelo rematch?
SP: "I like Canelo. I think GGG won the first fight, but I think there's going to be some adjustments made by the Canelo camp and I think they pull this one out by decision."
GL: When are you hoping to get back in the ring?
SP: "I'm not sure right now. I'd love to relax through Christmas, that's time for me and my family, plus it's Browns football season right now. When they tell me to get back in there to get ready, that's when I'll do it."
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?
SP: "God bless y'all. I hope all of the fans enjoyed the fight on Saturday night, stay tuned because the best is yet to come. The WBC welterweight championship now resides in Las Vegas and I hope the other champions are ready to unify."
