NATE CAMPBELL: "CASAMAYOR KNOWS I'LL FINISH HIM OFF AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHY HE DOESN'T WANT TO FIGHT ME!"
By G. Leon
GL: Can you give us some thoughts on the Casamayor-Katsidis fight? "It looked to me like Katsidis was on his way to crushing him. In the first round when he was knocking Katsidis down, the people in the corner were yelling how they want me. But then when the fight started to change they got real quiet in the corner. And that was against a young guy with not a lot of experience."
GL: So his performance didn't impress you at all?
Nate Campbell: "I've never been impressed with Casamayor."
GL: Casamayor is the fight you want to make the most. After the fight he said he'll fight whoever his promoter puts in front of him. At this point, do you feel that a fight between the two of you is the only fight that matters at 135?
NC: "Of course it is, but he's copping out the best way he can in that Cuban dialect of the Spanish language? He's slurring his speech, he's washed up. He knows I'll finish him and that's exactly why he doesn't to fight me."
GL: When they say they've already fought and defeated you, does that bother you considering how you've improved since then?
NC: "I thought I beat him the first time. Very few people thought he won the fight. People told me it was a draw, or it could have went one point one way or the other, but after the fight he's the one who went to the hospital. I'm going to put him in a coma this time."
GL: Do you think Don King wants to make the fight?
NC: "Of course he wants to make the fight, he's got the best fighter in the division. Don is the best promoter in the world and he knows I want this fight and he knows how to promote big fights and this is one of the biggest and most important fights in boxing."
GL: What was up with that suit?
NC: "You liked it didn't you.'
GL: I didn't say I liked it, I'm just asking what's up with it."
NC: "I came through looking like the grim reaper last night. I showed up at the press conference to let him know that I'm the best lightweight in the world. He fought a rugged kid who never fought anybody. I'm the man in this division."
GL: You and Joel were rooting for each other going into these fights, what happened? Where's the hatred coming from? Is the love affair over?
NC: "I never loved him, I don't even like him. I want to fight the best fighters, he thinks he's the best, I know I'm the best. Let's give the fans what they want to see. Everybody knows we're the two best fighters in the division so why wouldn't we fight? A lot of fights now are made in the press and Don King would tell you that he's ready to make the fight. Pick up the phone and call him. He's also talking about how he beat me on three weeks notice. That's a lie. He fought Yohnny Vargas, in December in Miami. Twelve people were there and I was one of them. I was at the fight and they called me on Christmas day, and he just finished fighting. I'm the one who fought him on three weeks notice. But if he feels he did so well on three weeks notice, we'll give him three months notice to think it over and get his old ass in shape to come on and get knocked out."
GL: Would you be willing to put a rematch clause in the contract?
NC: "He could get the third fight if he wants it, but he ain't going to want it. He could get what he wants, we could do a rubbermatch, but he's going to be walking on his heels when I'm through with him. You've got to bring some ass to get some ass."
GL: Closing thoughts?
NC: "I'm not going to say much, let the fans dictate what fight they want to see and we'll see if the old man is ready to step up to the plate?"
