With world super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in the process of selecting his next opponent, the WBC has offered another option to WBC interim champion David Benavidez in case Alvarez selects someone else. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman suggested Benavidez (pictured) move up to light heavyweight and fight a former WBC champion for an interim title at 175 pounds. Sulaiman tweeted: "Very proud to announce a sensational fight which the WBC has approved to sanction for the interim light heavyweight championship: Benavidez vs. Gvozdyk.Wish the best of luck for both champions." Sulaiman was referring to Oleksandr Gvozdyk, who is 29-1 including the World Series of Boxing. The Russian Gvozdyk held the WBC championship from 2018-2019 before losing his title and taking a lot of physical trauma vs. Artur Beterbiev. Gvozdyk took over three years off but returned with a three-win campaign last year.
