"A lot of his fighters are coming to us to do fights!"
Greg Leon: Congrats on a great event the other night. Can you give us some post fight thoughts on the card?Â
Bob Arum: "It was terrific. Corpus is a great city, all of the fights were entertaining and now it's onto the next one."Â
GL: Jerwin Anacajas your new Philippine sensation defended his IBF 115-pound title, what did you think of his performance?Â
BA:Â "He's not only a really good fighter, he's a very nice boy. I'm thrilled that he's part of the Top Rank group and we're looking to bring him back within the next three months."
GL: Do you think the comparisons to Manny Pacquiao are fair to him?
Bob Arum: "Of course not, but they're logical because he's from the Philippines and he's southpaw. Those are the only similarities I see. He's a totally different fighter, Manny was all over the place throwing punches this kid is a more deliberate fighter."
GL: About Jesse Hart, it's tough for him to make a statement when you're fighting a guy that's 25-7 [Thomas Awimbono], but when that guy's never been stopped and you get rid of him in ninety seconds, that's definitely a statement. What did you think of Hart's performance?
BA: "Jesse Hart is the hardest punching motherf**ker in the world. He's a really nice young man and I've always been fond of him. Just the fact that he lost to Zurdo [WBO 168-pound champion Gilberto Ramirez] doesn't stop his career. He's got a great future ahead of him."
GL: I spoke with Jesse after the fight and he thinks that Zurdo doesn't want that rematch unless it's for a belt. What do you think about that?
BA: "I don't know, these f**cking fighters can say whatever they want, we'll make the matches."
GL: Do you feel that you have the two best super middleweights in the world with Zurdo and Hart?
BA: "Absolutely, without even a question."
GL: Ray Beltran is headliner on the next one for the vacant WBO junior welterweight title and he's got a helluva story.
BA: "A great story, he's fighting for his green card so he desperately needs to become world champion in his next fight. He used to spar with Pacquiao and he's dreamed of winning a world title and he's going to be getting his opportunity a week from Friday."
GL: Shakur is also on that card.
BA: "Yes. He's advancing, he's training hard and he's very dilligent with his craft. He's going to be on at least one of our three shows in the Garden in March, April and May."
GL: Egidijus Kavaliaskus, an undefeated welterweight I know you're high on, is also on that card.
BA: "He's a helluva punches and like most of the fighters managed by Egis Klimas, he's a very good boxer. He's in with a tough Russian guy in a 50-50 fight, so hopefully he'll come through."
GL: Is Lomachenko's next fight taking shape or what?
BA: "Todd (Duboef) has had talks with Honda about Jorge Linares. Honda and Oscar De La Hoya are co-promoters, but Honda is the senior promoter and he asked that we negotiate through him, so we rely on Honda to talk to Oscar, and we're hoping that fight takes place in May."
GL: Ok, so Vasyl Lomachenko is no longer fighting on April 28th.
BA: "That is correct, one of the reasons being that Linares wasn't ready to fight in April."
GL: Obviously you give Linares no chance to beat Lomachenko, but how do you compare him to some of Loma's biggest fights, guys like Russell Jr, Walters, Rigondeaux?
BA: "Who knows? He's going up in weight, so that could be a challenge. Linares is a terrific fighter who is a good boxer and a good puncher, so it's a tough, tough fight. Whenever a guy goes up in weight you have to wonder if he'll keep his power and so forth, but I look at Lomachenko as one of the greats, so I think he'll win the fight, but it's not a walk in the park, it's a tough fight."
GL: What's Pacquiao's next move?
BA: "We're going to find out something in next couple of days, but it's looking like Manny's going to be fighting again and it's most likely going to be at Madison Square Garden on April 14th."
GL: Any names on a short list? Any names you can give me?
BA: "Not until we sign, no. I'm not going to get held up by anybody by releasing a name."
GL: Pacquiao-Lomachenko is a dream fight of yours. You would like for it to take place now, Anatoly [Lomachenko, the boxer's father] had other ideas, so it's on hold. How long do you think it's going to be before it becomes a realistic discussion?
BA: "Let's see what happens after their next fights. The Lomachenko camp, where the father is the trainer and I have great respect for him, he knows more than I do and I follow their lead. Egis is in the same position. Egis would have wanted that fight to happen earlier, but the father is the boss."
GL: Would Lomachenko NoMasChenkoing Manny Pacquiao make him a PPV star?
BA: "Yes."
GL: I'm really looking forward to March 17th.
BA: "We did a presale and Mick Conlan has a code and in the first day he sold 1,000 tickets. We're practically sold out and we haven't gone on sale yet."
GL: Felix Verdejo is on that card too so forget about it, it's gonna be sold out for sure.
BA: "I'm telling you with this new platform on ESPN we're putting on great shows and if we don't then it's on us. Before we could blame it on f**king Peter Nelson, we'd have to blame it on ourselves."
GL: Well you certainly have enough in house talent that you could keep doing it yourselves for quite some time.
BA: "Well, you know our guys, our talent is out fighting other talent by and large. With these f**king writers, all they look at is if the outside talent is an Al Haymon or De La Hoya fighter, forgetting that talent is all over. It's not like we're matching Valdez with a Top Rank guy. We're matching him with an Eddie Hearn guy."
GL: Assuming Terence Crawford takes care of Jeff Horn how long do you think it's going to be before you're able to match him with a PBC welterweight champion?
BA: "I'm not sure. We have the legal ability to talk to any of his fighters, if they want to fight with us that's fine, if they dont...
GL: Damn....
BA: "What?"
GL: That's strong Bob, and I've heard that's true.
BA: "That is true. A lot of the fighters that are being advised by him are coming to us to do fights for them and that's completely legal and you know he's got some good welterweights out there and we would be pleased to give them fights."
GL: You're kind of letting the cat out of the bag.
BA: "Why do you say that?"
GL: You know why (a few seconds of silence)... Because up until recently Al Haymon talent were considered untouchable and that's no longer the case from I've been hearing.
BA: "You're absolutely right, it's no longer the case. Legally speaking it is no longer the case."
GL: So Arum [is saying] to Errol Spence and Keith Thurman, and all other interested Haymon talent, our phone lines are open, give us a call if you want to talk?
BA: "Any fighter that he has that's interested, call us and then we'll offer them a deal to fight whoever and they have an advisor in Al Haymon, so they'll go back to Haymon and he'll either advise them yes or no and then they could go on and do whatever the f**k they want. In other words, Haymon can't veto it legally. He can tell them he doesn't think it's a good idea or he's got a better fight, but he's not legally allowed to forbid them from doing anything."
