Boxingtalk salutes blood-and-guts British super middleweight John Ryder, who announced his retirement yesterday following last week's loss to Jaime Munguia. Ryder leaves the ring with a record of 32-7 and many believe he was robbed of a world championship when he lost a close decision to Callum Smith in a 2019 WBA title bid. The career highlight for Ryder was his 2022 campaign in which he defeated former middleweight champion Danny Jacobs and then won the WBO interim super middleweight title with an upset of previously unbeaten Zack Parker. That fight propelled Ryder into a 2023 battle against world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, a fight that Ryder lost but also demonstrated to all that he is as tough as they come.
Ryder said, "after 13 odd years of boxing, I’ve decided after my latest defeat to hang up my gloves. Call time am I fighting career and look to pursue my training career." Boxingtalk wishes Ryder success and happiness in his future endeavors.
