Catching up with JC Martinez

WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar “Rey” Martínez sat down with the WBC's media division to talk about his step up to super flyweight on March 5th when he'll be in San Diego to challenge the legendary Román “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, a former four-division champion. Gonzalez would have been fighting WBC/WBA super champion Juan Francisco Estrada for the third time but Estrada tested positive for the coronavirus. This created the oportunity for the bold Martínez to volunteer to climb up to the 115-pound division to fight “Chocolatito”.

Martínez, who has dyed his hair purple, said he`s strong and not only physically but emotionally ready. He enthused: “I`m feel very strong going up in weight. I'm 56 kilograms [123.5 pounds] and will slim to 54 kg [119 pounds] during the week. I have the hunger, I`m ready for anything and I plan to go on to the attack. I will face a tough fighter who I greatly respect.  But I`m very ambitious to become the first Mexican fighter to KO Chocolatito!"

Regarding his future weight division, Martinez said this would be something to discuss with his team, but one of his goals is to unify the flyweight titles and perhaps return to 115 pounds, but that will be decided in the future. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, explained that the WBC authorized Martinez's move up to the super flyweight division, but that regardless of the result, he will continue to reign as flyweight monarch, and in case he defeats Gonzalez, he will have to take a decision of which division to stay in.
