The WBC reports the death of former Mexican light heavyweight champion David “Macetón” Cabrera, who reportedly passed away this past Saturday as a result of the coronavirus. Cabrera boxed professionally from 1977-1989, compiling a record of 41-13. Born in Juchitan, Oaxaca, David made Mexican boxing history despite adversity in the form of a serious motorcycle accident that permanently affected his right leg. Cabrera won the Mexican title by fighting a twelve rounder in just his fifth pro fight. His reign lasted from 1977-1982. The most recongizable name on his record is Marvin Camel. Cabrera jumped up to cruiserweight in 1979, just as the division was starting, and lost to Camel, who went on to win the inaugural WBC title. Boxingtalk joins the WBC in sending its condolences to the friends and family of David “Macetón” Cabrera.
