Uprising Promotions announced that former NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams will make his amateur boxing debut at the upcoming Broad Street Brawl, which will be hosted on May 29th at the Léman Ballroom in New York City. The action-packed event will raise funds for Bigvision Community, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting young adults in recovery from substance abuse. Carter-Williams, a standout guard from Syracuse University and the 11th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, made an immediate impact in the league. He earned 2013–14 NBA Rookie of the Year honors after averaging 16.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game for the Sixers during his rookie season. Notably, he nearly achieved a quadruple-double in his NBA debut, recording 22 points, 12 assists, nine steals and seven rebounds against the Miami Heat. After a decade-long pro basketball career, Carter-Williams has since turned his focus to a variety of new business endeavors, and he has also begun work as a college basketball analyst for ESPN. With his competitive spirit still inspiring him to find new challenges, Carter-Williams started boxing and is now set to make his amateur debut when Uprising Promotions returns to action on May 29th.
“We are excited to have someone of Michael Carter-Williams’ caliber on the show. You do not get to the top of the game like he did in basketball without being a seriously hard worker, so I am curious to see how his athletic ability transitions into boxing,” said Ronson Frank, president of Uprising Promotions. “Along with Bigvision Community and the other participants who will be fighting on this card, Michael Carter-Williams will be helping us provide assistance to individuals who are working to make a positive change in their lives. We really hope the boxing community will come out and support this great event so we can make an even stronger impact.”
Presented by Uprising Promotions in association with HIIT the Deck Boxing Gym, Broad Street Brawl on May 29th will feature a variety of amateur bouts, with Carter-Williams' debut being a key highlight of the evening. Tickets for the show are on sale now.
