Ireland's Callum Walsh wins in Boston

Callum Walsh TKO2 Wesley Tucker ... Irish junior middleweight Callum Walsh (6-0, 5 KOs) blasted out Wesley Tucker (15-5, 9 KOs) in two rounds at the Agganis Arena in Boston to start St Patrick`s Day Celebration with an Emerald flourish. The Cork-born Walsh, age 22, wasted no time in launching a barrage of punches against the southpaw. A left followed by a couple of rights toppled the man from Toledo, Ohio. Tucker got up, but Walsh dropped him for a second time soon after. Again, Tucker got up, but was backed into the ropes and took a knee. Referee Leo Gerstel had seen enough and so had Tucker's corner, who threw in the towel. A fast night`s work which ended one second before the bell would have tolled to end the second round.

Promoter Tom Loeffler who was also at hand for this event said: “With Callum still aged only twenty-two, fighting under the bright lights in a big Boston Arena with Dana White ringside plus all the celebrities…George St Pierre, Max Crosby from the Raiders. Gerry Cooney and Micky Ward…he handled it all in a very calm and collected way. You could see how much better caliber he was than anyone else on the show, clearly indicating what his potential is and what the future holds. His abilities and his charisma shone. This has proved a great launching pad for Callum, not only in Boston, but also on the Eastern Seaboard. Dana couldn`t have been happier with Callum`s performance. As many UFC shows that he does, Dana gets very excited when Callum gets into the ring and puts on a great show. He is one hundred percent supportive of Callum`s career and building boxing on the UFC Fight Platform.” Freddie Roach was also impressed by Callum`s youthful maturity, especially as there was a late change in opponent due to injury. The opponent Callum fought brought appreciably more experience to the fray but was still swiftly overcome."
