Jesus Perez W10 JoJo Diaz... Tijuana's Jesus "Ricky" Perez scored an upset of former champion Joseph "JoJo" Diaz in Commerce, California. It was an exciting fight and a life-changing win for Perez, who said this win will allow him to become a full-time boxer and quit his job as a bricklayer. The scores were announced as 95-94 Diaz, overruled by 96-94 and a terrible 99-90 for Perez. Lou Moret was the judge who turned in the stinker of a scorecard in a fight that coud have gone either way. Compubox gave Diaz a 188-137 advantage in punches landed, although the harder punches were landed by Perez. Diaz is a former 130-pound champion now fighting at junior welterweight. He's a good boxer, but his punching power has not moved up with his weight. It was a very close first half of the fight. In round five, Diaz grew frustrated and shoved Perez down and through the ropes coming off a clinch. The referee deducted a point from Diaz. Perez continued to do well but Diaz hurt him to the body in round eight. Undaunted, Perez continued bringing the fight to Diaz, but ex-champion was more accurate with his punches. Diaz had a good tenth round, and there was suspense in the air waiting for the verdict to be read.
