Ivan Montiel: While watching the pay-per-view show on Saturday, I saw some sort of argument taking place in the background. This morning while having my coffee and watching boxing videos on YouTube, I noticed David Benavidez [your son, the former super middleweight champion], yourself and [WBC middleweight champion Jermall] Charlo. Talk to us about what happened.
Jose Benavidez Sr.: As I was looking towards my right side, there was this lady sitting next to me. I then heard someone apologize to her and as I turn around there’s Charlo saying that I am talking sh*t. I responded by saying no, I am here to watch Showtime Boxing but if you want something, let’s make that fight happen. It’s that simple. Charlo kept talking and I told him to get out and just leave me alone. I repeated, ‘If you really want to get into that ring then let’s make it happen.’ All he has to do is accept a fight with my son instead of talking. As he kept walking backwards with someone holding him back that’s when he acted like he wanted to fight! He was right in front of me and didn’t do anything but once someone held him back, he was like a chihuahua! These Charlo twins are not lions they are chihuahuas! At the end of the day what are these guys going to do? They were drunk and disrespectful. That is embarrassing.
IM: A lot of times those who bark out loud sometimes don’t want to really fight.
JB: Exactly! I want to thank Dallas, Texas they were showing us a lot of love. It was unbelievable. Once the Charlo twins were shown on that big screen, everyone booed them. Then David was shown and he got a lot of love. That’s a great feeling… I mean to go to their home, and the public doesn’t like them…
IM: You know, I met your son at the International Boxing Hall of Fame one time. He was with his promoter Sampson Lewkowicz. David was cool and calm. He didn’t say much but one thing that many of us don’t realize is that the quiet ones are sometimes the most dangerous ones.
JB: Exactly! I think that we should make that fight with Charlo happen, it’s an easy fight to make but Charlo is always coming up with excuses. This guy will say that he wants to fight and then will say that he won’t fight a guy who’s under 25 years of age. Then there’s the coronavirus. Too many excuses, you know. Now it’s about my son being a bully who shouldn’t be fighting at 168 pounds and that he should be fighting as a cruiserweight. Man, these guys come up with a lot of stuff I just don’t understand it.
IM: I am looking forward to David's next fight [vs. former IBF middleweight title holder David] Lemieux fight. Let’s say everything goes smooth will we see Benavidez versus Jermall Charlo next?
JB: Man, that’s a super fight! Look, Charlo is a champion for a reason, he’s a dangerous fighter. He’s a good fighter, he’s not an easy fighter but at the same time, we are willing to take the risk and fight this monster. This guy just needs to grow some balls! We can’t force him, we can’t bring him into the ring. Charlo has to want to do it. It’s an easy fight to make, super easy fight to make! Whatever he says, whatever the rest of them fighters say, we are willing to fight them.
