Former multiple-division champion Juan Manuel Márquez officially announced his retirement via his ESPN Spanish-language television show. According to the WBC, Marquez said, "This hurts, but everything has a beginning and an end and we have to accept it, with the pain of my soul and heart, but this is so ... it's the right moment to say goodbye. I announced my retirement today... Now, there are other challenges that we have to face." Marquez,  who had not fought since a 2014 win over Mike Alvarado, made it clear that the injuries he suffered, one in the knee and one in the left shoulder, were decisive factors in his timely decision.  Marquez leaves the sport with a record of 56-7-1. A future Hall of Famer, he will always be remembered for four fights against Manny Pacquiao, including one of the all-time great knockouts in their final bout. Marquez also had wins over champions Juan Diaz, Marco Antonio Barrera, Joel Casamayor, Orlando Salido, Derrick Gainer and Manuel Medina.
