Longshot: Veyre calls out Baumgardner

WBC junior lightweight champion Caroline Veyre, who barely won the vacant championship in her last fight, is calling out three-belt champion Alycia Baumgardner for a fight that she knows will not happen. Veyre tweeted: "If AB won’t fight the only other champion in her division, she can’t call herself the champion of that division! The self proclaimed 'face' of boxing needs to step up and get a belt in another division, and let the true 130-pound champion fight the best in her division! 10 x 2 minute rounds!" That last sentence is likely a deal breaker since, as Veyre very well knows, Baumgarnder held all four of the major sanctioning body belts but was stripped by the WBC bewcause she insisted that her last fight consist of three-minute rounds.

PRIOR BOXINGTALK COVERAGE

APRIL 18, 2026:  Three-belt junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner largely controlled the action in New York City's Madison Square Garden on Friday, defeating Bo Mi Re Shin by unanimous decision. Official scores were 98-92 (twice) and 99-91. Baumgardner retained her WBA, WBO and IBF titles in a bout that was contested over ten, three-minute rounds, a rarity because women's boxing normally features two-minute rounds.

FEB. 11, 2026... Canada's Caroline Veyre defeated Delfine Persoon in a very ugly fight for the vacant WBC junior lightweight championship. Veyre fought like a female John Ruiz, clutching and holding Person excessively throughout the ten rounds. The tactic worked well for Veyre, as referee Rodriguez deducted a total of four points, two from each boxer, but allowed Veyre to negate Persoon's offense. In rounds four and seven, as Veyre held Persoon, the referee unreasonably deducted points from Persoon for hitting behind the head. Veyre's holding penalties, both richly deserved, came in rounds five and nine.  The verdict of 95-91, 94-92 and 98-88 in Veyre's favor was received with resounding boos from the Grand Rapids, Michigan crowd. The 41 year-old Persoon (50-4, 20 KOs) knows she won't get many more championship opportunities and was extremely upset with the officiating. Veyre (11-1) moved up from featherweight for this opportunity.
