Mayweather fighting cryptocurrency lawsuit

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather is fighting a federal class action lawsuit brought by unhappy investors in EthereumMax cryptocurrency tokens. The lawsuit named several other celebrity defendants, including Kim Kardashian and former professional athletes Antonio Brown and Paul Pierce. In a motion to dismiss file by Mayweather’s attorneys last week in the Central District of California, the ex-champion argued through his attorneys that the complaint against him “does not identify a single statement made by Mayweather about eMax tokens or EthereumMax. The absence of such allegations is fatal to every claim pled against Mayweather and requires that he be dismissed from this lawsuit.”

In June of 2021, Mayweather attended a bitcoin conference in Miami, apparently wearing EthereumMax branded clothing but did not specifically endorse the crypto currency. The motion to dismiss convincingly sets forth that “Plaintiffs are pursuing claims against Mayweather based upon the statements of others claiming a ‘partnership,’ a single online article speculating that Mayweather’s statement at a Bitcoin conference that there was going to ‘be another cryptocurrency just as large as Bitcoin someday’ might be referring to EthereumMax and Mayweather’s wearing of various pieces of clothing with EthereumMax and/or its logo. Importantly, Mayweather is not alleged to have made any statement promoting EthereumMax, nor is he alleged to have even received eMax Tokens”

The civil lawsuit was filed in January. The motion to dismiss is scheduled to be heard on November 7th.

According to the New York Post, Kardashian has agreed to pay a $1.26 million fine to the SEC and is cooperating with the government’s investigation. The fine, however, does not end Kardashian’s involvement in the class action.
