Mexico's Yamileth Mercado gains WBC 122-pound title

Yamileth Mercado W10 Fatuma Zarika... Mexico's Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado (15-2-0, 4 KOs) made history by becoming the first Chihuahuan woman to win a world title. Mercado defeated Kenya's Fatuma Zarika (32-13-2, 17 KOss) by unanimous decision to capture the WBC super bantamweight belt at the Poliforo of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua. This was a rematch, with the now 34 year-old Zarika winning by split decision in Kenya last year. This time, Mercado's non-stop work rate impressed the judges to the tune of scorecards reading 99-91 and 98-92 (twice). The fighter from Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, left no room for doubt hammering out an intelligent, aggressive fight, against a lethargic, listless Zarikat who fought only in  spurts. “I worked a lot on the straight punches, which I had not previously done. We wanted them to be more accurate, managing to maintain control at a more prudent distance, which allowed us to keep up with the fight,” Mercado said. “I am very excited, because being a world champion is something I had dreamed of since I was very young. I always said that I was going to have my first world championship fight aged 20 and I did so. Now a year later, I have become a champion, the youngest in my division.” source: wbc
