Nevada Athletic Commission Chairman abruptly resigns

With a new governor taking over at the beginning of the year, Nevada Athletic Commission Chairman Steve Cloobeck has resigned, effective immediately. The dispute, however, is not strictly political; rather it is over a serious boxing-related dispute. Cloobeck is at odds with Governor-elect Joe Lombardo who takes office in January. Lombardo and Cloobeck clashed over how to handle the death of Nathan Valencia, a college student who died from a brain injury suffered in an unsanctioned boxing match. Cloobeck wanted criminal charges brought against the organizers of the fight, but Lombardo, who at the time was the sheriff in charge of Las Vegas' police department, refused to bring any criminal charges.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Cloobeck wrote, “I cannot work for the Governor-Elect Lombardo. He is not honest nor grateful for the great benefits I’ve given to the State of Nevada. It has been an honor to work with [...] my State of Nevada. As you know, I tried very hard to find vindication for the death of Nathan Valencia and unfortunately after four attempts the Governor-Elect former Sheriff of Nevada did nothing to prove the cause of his death.”
