New Mexico boxing update: Tapia Promotions show set for Feb. 24th

Promoter Teresa Tapia of Tapia Promotions will promote a boxing show on February 24th at the Rio Rancho Event Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Two sons of legendary fighters are set to lace up the gloves in separate bouts.  Jose Luis Castillo Romero, son of two-time lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo will be fighting as aprofessional and Nicco Tapia, son of boxing hall of famer Johnny Tapia is set for an amateur bout.  Lightweight Abel Mendoza (33-0) is scheduled to put his undefeated record on the line that night.  "I'm not a fighter, I'm a lover, but I fight for love'"  said Mendoza.  Also, Nico Hernandez (9-0), Jason Sanchez(15-3), and Johnny Tapia protege Josh "Pitbull" Torres(24-7-2) are set to be in action on the card.  The day prior, on February 23rd, the Round House Room 318 will play host to an event featuring Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, beginning at 10am. Governor Lujan Grisham will officially proclaimations February 23rd as Amateur Boxing Day in New Mexico, a state with a rich boxing history.  That event will also feature weigh-ins for the Tapia Promotions event.  The opening bout is scheduled to take place the next day (Feb. 24th) at 6PM on fight night.  The event will be available for purchase on FITE.TV, with tickets are available for purchase here.  Former Boxingtalk journalist Christian Schmidt will be the ring announcer.
