At first, it looked like Curiel would be retaining his world title belt with the Mexican dominating the first nine rounds of the contest. However, in the tenth round, an unsteady Curiel was pounced on by Nontshingha who unleashed numerous assaults and with the defending champion not able to respond to these attacks in the closing stages of the round, the referee stopped the fight and Nontshingha became a world champion once more.
