Report: Dubois suffered broken eye socket

According to BBC reports, Daniel Dubois suffered a broken orbital bone and nerve damage around his left eye in Saturday's heavyweight loss to Joe Joyce. Dubois is only 23 years old, so there is plenty of time for him to recover and resume his career, but there is real concern Dubois may become a modern-day Michael Grant. (In the late 1990s, Grant was considered the future of the heavyweight division before fighting heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. Grant went on to a decent career but nowhere near what was expected. Dubois had similarly high expectations as the so-called future of the division).

Fight report: Joyce stopped Dubois in a massive all-British heavyweight fight on Saturday. It was a very close fight with both men landing hard punches.  Dubois' left eye closed and the 23 year-old seemed uncertain in his corner as the fight wore on. By round ten, the eye was nearly completely closed but Dubois was still fighting well right up until the moment Joyce landed a clean jab directly on the eye. Dubois seemed to panic. He touched his eye and took a knee, allowing himself to be counted out.  At time of the stoppage, Dubois was ahead on two cards, 88-83 and 86-85, and trailing on the third 84-87. With the win, Joyce picked up a trio of straps: the European, British and Commonwealth championship. The 35 year-old Joyce showed a great chin and earned a spot in the top five or six heavyweights in the world. Next up could be a fight vs. Oleksandr Usyk, one of the two men to beat Joyce in a World Series of Boxing contest. (Usyk won a five-round decision over Joyce in 2013). source: ESPN+
