Sam Noakes to face Yvan Mendy for European lightweight championship

Queensberry will promote a show at London's York Hall on April 20th. At the top of the bill, lightweight Sam Noakes (13-0) will test himself against veteran campaigner Yvan Mendy of France. Noakes is on a strong run of six straight quality wins, culminating in his British lightweight title success against Lewis Sylvester in February.  The fight vs. Mendy (48-6-1) will be for the vacant European championship, last held by Gavin Gwynne. The title became vacant following Gavin Gwynne’s defeat to Mark Chamberlain in a non-title bout. Mendy, a former European champion, has not suffered a stoppage in his six defeats.Mendy fought for the European title in December 2022 but was outpointed by Denys Berinchyk, his only defeat in nine bouts since Luke Campbell got him in 2018. Mendy bounced back with a 2023 win over previously undefeated Bastien Ballesta. Meanwhile, Berinchyk is fighting for the world title next against Emanuel Navarrete on May 18th.

Also featuring at York Hall on the 20th is junior welterweight Henry Turner, who was supposed to be up against the unbeaten Bradley Townsend, but Townsend has picked up an injury and a replacement opponent is forthcoming.Another fighter scheduled for this show is Andrew Cain, who is making his return to the ring after a hand injury sustained against Ionut Baluta last time out.
