Stanionis vs. Ortiz back on for July 8th

The WBA regular welterweight title fight between Eimantas Stanionis (pictured) and Vergil Ortiz Jr. has been rescheduled for July 8th at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. Promoter Golden Boy announced the bout through its official media on Monday and now both contenders are ready for a long-awaited WBA mandatory bout.  Stanionis and Ortiz were originally scheduled to face each other on April 29th, but Ortiz’s health problems prevented him from fighting on that date. Now, with the challenger recovered, both have been working hard.

Stanionis (17-3 including the World Series of Boxing) will be making the first defense of his belt, which he won last April when he defeated Radzhab Butaev by split decision. The 28 year-old Lithuanian has a great amateur past and is undefeated in his professional career, which is evidence of his quality and strength in the ring.

Ortiz (19-0), on the other hand, will have his first opportunity for a championship, [even though it is a secondary one]. The American is 25 years old and has an aggressive style combined with a devastating punch.
