The WBA is creating another paper championship, having announced that a welterweight fight between Ryan Garcia and Rolando Romero, set for May 2nd in New York City, will be for the WBA rgular championship. In order to accomodate the extra title, the WBA elevated the regining champion, Jaron “Boots” Ennis (pictured), from champion to super champion. The announcment was not a surprise because the WBA generally uses the super championship designation when a boxer holds more than one title, and Ennis recently added the WBA title to the IBF version he already owned. With the new designation comes responsibility: Ennis is now mandated to defend his super championship against Shakhram Giyasov — the mandatory challenger. Notably, Giyasov previously stepped aside to allow a unification bout between Ennis and former WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis, despite being next in line for a title shot. Per WBA rules, Ennis must face Giyasov within 120 days of his April 12th victory over Stanionis. Furthermore, the winner of Ennis vs. Giyasov will be required to face the winner of Garcia vs. Romero.
