Charlie Edwards NC Julio Cesar Martinez... In an unusual but proper move, the WBC changed the result of a bout, allowing its flyweight champion, Charlie Edwards (15-1, 6 KOs), to retain his championship. Edwards was facing Mexico's Julio Cesar Martinez (14-1, 11 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, England this weekend. Martinez pressed the action and knocked down Edwards in the third round. But Martinez landed a hard body punch when Edwards was on his knees. The referee did not call a foul and instead began a ten count as if it were a proper knockdown. Edwards could not beat the count of ten and Martinez was declared the new champion. He was announced to the crowd as the winner and began his celebration, but [WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman entered the ring and] the WBC immediately decreed the fight a no contest. The WBC also ordered an immediate rematch, basing its decision on the instant replay, which was shown in the arena and clearly showed Martines knocking Edwards out while Edwards was already down. source: wbc
