WBC orders rematch between Eggington and Cutler

Sam Eggington W9 Lee Cutler... The WBC received a formal appeal from Lee Cutler with regards to the result from his loss against Sam Eggignton in a WBC regional title fight contested in Birmingham, England this past Friday (April 24th). Both men suffered facial damage in the war, but Cutler's wounds were the reason the bout was stopped in round nine. The WBC appointed a review panel which reviewed the complete fight, the supervisors report from Charlie Giles and the additional facts and testimonies from both sides as well as the ruling from the BBBC. The conclusion from the panel is the following :

The original cut was confirmed by the referee to have been caused by a legal punch. The fight was tough with multiple accidental head clashes. The cut was worsened by at least one accidental head clash. The referee acknowledged the accidental head clash. The referee brought Cutler for a doctor assessment who indicated the cut was dangerous and severe enough to stop the contest which the referee accepted. The official result was a technical decision in favor of Eggington, who was ahead on the scorecards.

Under WBC championship rules, if a fight cannot continue after a boxer suffers a cut, abrasion, or excessive swelling due to a headbutt, elbow, etc., whether accidental or unintentional, no points will be deducted. A Technical decision will be rendered according to the scorecards, if the stoppage occurs after the start of the fifth round. The WBC determined Cutler was cut by a legal punch followed by an accidental head butt, which correctly resulted in a technical decision for Eggington.

The WBC committee confirmed the result of Eggignton as winner by technical decision. However, Eggignton was ordered to produce a medical report to confirm his condition, and when he is ready to fight, it ordered a direct rematch between Eggington and Cutler.
