With unification in the 102-pound division completed only a month ago, the WBC announced it will create an interim atomweight title, with Camila Zamorano facing former title holder Mika Iwakawa for the secondary strap. The fight will take place next Saturday, June 14th in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, Zamorano's birthplace. Just seventeen years old, Zamorano got a quality win at the end of last year defeating Norj Guro by unanimous decision. Zamorano has an undefeated record of 11-0 with 1 KO. Iwakawa, age 41, had two reigns as a 102-pound monarch and holds a record of 13-7-1 with 4 KOs.

APRIL 6, 2025 ... Germany's Tina Rupprecht was crowned unified atomweight champion in her home country. The 32 year-old Rupprecht handed previously undefeated Sumire Yamanaka of Japan her first loss. Rupprecht's triumph came via decision after an exciting fight at the MBS Arena in Potsdam in front of 2,500 spectators. Rupprecht, who is barely five feet tall and is nicknamed “Tiny Tina,” was quick on her feet and the more active boxer overall. Her Japanese opponent launched a few counterattacks but in the end, Rupprecht prevailed thanks to her greater variability. Rupprecht entered the fight as WBO, WBA, and WBC champion, while Yamanaka came in with IBF recognition.
In November, Rupprecht became a three-belt champion by defeating Japan's Eri Matsuda (7-2-1, 1 KO) via unanimous decision in Heidelberg, Germany. In the first round, Rupprecht decked Matsuda with a strong right to the face that sent her straight to the canvas. Before that, Rupprecht had defeated Fabiana Bytyqi in January to become a two-division world champion.
Yamanaka defeated Mika Iwakawa in her most recent outing to retain the IBF title. However, this will be Yamanaka’s second fight outside of Japan and her first ever outside of Asia, a significant factor that could test her ability to perform on the global stage.
